The Sonic Maximizer uses crossovers to split the incoming material into three bands, then "imparts fixed phase correction (based on BBE's research) for the full program and dynamic corrections of the high frequencies where most harmonic information exists." Since BBE's engineers set the crossover points and phase-correcting teeny-tiny internal delay, there's not much for you to do. You can't screw with the knobs and get it wrong (which is the point). You get to set input level for each channel, the "amount" of the process you want, and Low Frequency Level (which may be needed to warm the material after phase correction is applied).
